The Old Slave Mart, constructed in 1859, at the time was referred to as "the shed", using the walls of the German Fire Hall to its west to support the roof timbers. Previously, slaves were traded in public, however an 1856 city ordinance prohibited public sales and the practice relocated to places such as 'the shed'. In 1938, the property was purchased by Miriam B. Wilson, who turned the site into a museum of African American history, arts and crafts.
